Ethics and sustainability at SmartAkva
At SmartAkva, we believe that sound decision-support in aquaculture must be built on more than analytical precision. It must also be built on accountability — to the fish in our care, to the environment we operate within, and to the industry we are part of.
-
We are committed to promoting solutions that reduce resource use and environmental impact:
We train customers and help facilitate the use of the production method Recirculating Aquaculture Systems (RAS), which is highly water-efficient.
We help optimise feed consumption and the purification level of wastewater.
We work with production methods that include circular production, where wastewater from fish is used to produce vegetables, bioenergy, or fertilizer, resulting in a highly sustainable environmental footprint.
-
SmartAkva is committed to keeping overarching regulations on the agenda, particularly the Animal Welfare Act and the Aquaculture Act with associated regulations. Good fish health is a prerequisite for sustainable production:
We provide advice on water quality, feeding regimes, and biosecurity.
Our goal is to help build safe, biosecure facilities with minimal risk of fish mortality. We create learning arenas where the industry can come together and share experiences regarding risk in land-based farming.
We train customers in animal welfare, fish health, and fish diseases.
We promote the use of monitoring systems for early detection of disease, reduced welfare, and stress.
We encourage non-medicinal treatment and preventive measures.
-
We want to contribute to value creation and responsible development in coastal communities:
We collaborate with local stakeholders and support capacity building.
We facilitate dialogue with authorities, research communities, and local communities.
We develop solutions that generate economic returns without compromising the environment, fish health, or social responsibility.
-
We operate with integrity and transparency:
We comply with applicable laws, regulations, and industry standards.
We require our partners to adhere to equivalent sustainability principles.
We are committed to the continuous improvement and updating of our policy.
-
We measure and document the effect of our advice and solutions:
We evaluate and adjust practices based on new knowledge and technology.
We encourage our customers to establish their own sustainability goals and follow them up systematically.
We encourage industry and authorities to develop standardisation of technology and production methods.
We encourage our customers to establish their own sustainability goals and follow them up systematically.
